My husband and I have a new passion … Downton Abbey.
This first season series started coming on television here during the holiday season and we enjoyed watching it while we had some time off. Watching it is an escape from the daily grind. Well, we never got to see the end of the first season showings because somehow the scheduling on German TV does not make sense. So I decided to order the box set on dvd with all the season showings so far. We just got to the end of the Christmas special and we’re starting season three this weekend. I here we are in for some surprises in the third season showings!
I must say some of the events that take place can take a toll on ones nerves. Is it possible that so many events can take place in one house (family)? Well I suppose there would be no need to do a series if nothing ever happened in it right? It’s kind of like those criminal shows that take place in small towns and you wonder if there is anyone left still living in that town after the series has been running a while. You just have to get into dream mode and play pretend, after all, isn’t that what TV and movies are all about?
There are lots of reasons why I love watching period movies and dramas like this. I’m still pinching myself that ET would want to watch this with me, but he says it is an escape from the work around this cottage and the reality of real work. So we enjoy watching it together and he’s brushing up his English along the way. So am I because the accents are sometimes difficult for me to understand with my American backround.
Mainly what I love about this period drama is watching how the characters carry themselves. They are so elegant. I believe we need more elegance in this world of ours. I know what you might be thinking, and yes, I’m so very glad we are living in a democratic society, but I do think we can learn something from how the old aristocrats behaved (in public at least 🙂
I also adore Maggie Smith!
The other thing I love are the houses and the way the rooms are decorated, the furniture. Just inspiring. There is not only Downton Abbey but also the “cottage” where Mathew Crawley and his mother live, as well as the house of the Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager of Grantham (aka. Maggie Smith) (whew). The series was filmed on location at what is actually Highclere Castle.

a wonderful post on Downton Abbey decorated rooms:
All in all, it’s a must see if you love period movies for the acting, the scenery and decor!
Now here’s a dose of reality.
All things taken in stride.
Have a lovely weekend my friends!
